The first round of presidential elections in Romania: the far-right candidate leads.


The leader of the far-right party 'Alliance for the Union of Romanians' George Simion is leading the results of the first round of presidential elections in Romania, having received 40.94% of the votes. In second place is the former mayor of Bucharest Nicusor-Daniel Dan, running as an independent candidate, with 20.99%.
According to the Romanian Central Electoral Commission, Simion received twice as many votes as Dan and the candidate from the 'National Liberal Party' Crin Antonescu, who garnered 20.09%, after counting 99.99% of the ballots.
Since no candidate exceeded 50% of the votes, a second round will take place in two weeks, on May 18, 2025. Simion and Dan, who is known for his anti-corruption efforts, will compete in it.
Crin Antonescu conceded defeat and stated that 'the votes have spoken.' He did not provide recommendations for voting to his supporters in the second round.
Other candidates, Victor Ponta and Elena Lasconi, received significantly fewer votes - 13.06% and 2.68%, respectively.
