A major winter storm sweeping across the United States will not prevent the US Congress from holding a session to officially confirm Donald Trump's election as president. This was stated by the Speaker of the House of Representatives from the Republicans, Mike Johnson.
The Electoral Count Act requires this on January 6 at 1:00 PM - so, regardless of whether there is a blizzard or not, we will be in that chamber to make sure it gets done, Johnson stated in an interview on Fox News 'Sunday Morning Futures', Reuters reports.
Reports of the storm did not affect the decision of lawmakers to appear at the session. They returned to Washington on Friday after the winter break, and Republicans gathered to discuss legislative issues.
Other leaders also confirmed their attendance at the session and emphasized that they do not consider postponing due to the weather.
The storm, approaching central regions and states of the Mid-Atlantic, is expected to bring heavy snowfall and wind, according to the National Weather Service.
