Ukrainian philologist explained how to correctly use the English term 'to donate'.
What 'to donate' is and what alternatives to the word exist, was told by Olha Vasyliieva.
Today we talk about 'donates'. If this anglicism is to be conveyed correctly, it should be 'donate' (Eng. donate) – a monetary donation, and to donate money – 'to donate'. In contrast, 'donate' (Eng. donut) is an American donut with filling and glaze. It turns out that 'to donate' means to eat glazed donuts or to have tea with glazed donuts? – says the linguist.
Olha Vasyliieva noted that the term 'to donate' can be replaced with the words 'contribution', 'donation' or 'offering'.
She also mentioned the history of Ukrainian terminology and the short period of development of Ukrainian terminology in the USSR, after which most linguists who worked on Ukrainian technical terminology were repressed.
There was also a discussion among linguists regarding the proper naming of the residents of Sumy, initiated by a letter from the director of the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
