American crabs are already breeding near Odesa - is there a danger.

In the Black Sea off the coast of Odesa region, the breeding of the American blue crab is occurring. This species may impact the ecosystem but can also become a new source of profit. Scientists have already recorded instances of finding eggs.

Odesa ecologist Yuriy Kvach told this to Novyny.LIVE journalists.

According to Yuriy Kvach, last year a female with eggs was found near Chornomorsk. This indicates that the species has started to breed actively in this region.

'It already lives here. We cannot get rid of it, we cannot destroy it - we can only control its population', noted the ecologist.

The American blue crab is quite large, reaching 20-25 centimeters in width. It is characterized by blue-colored claws and a light brown shell. It can be aggressive only in self-defense.

'We caught them with bare hands. They pinch, which is unpleasant, but they do not cause serious harm. Our local stone crabs are significantly more dangerous. They can actually bite off a finger', explained the specialist.

The presence of the American blue crab in the Black Sea raises certain concerns due to the potential impact on local marine species. However, it may also become an additional source of income for the fishing industry.

'This is an industrial species. If we organize fishing correctly - we will be able to control it. This is good for ecology and beneficial for people. Fresh crab products could appear here, not just imported', Kvach noted.

It is mentioned that rays and chicks of a rare duck have also appeared in the Black Sea, which are important for the marine environment of the region.

In the Black Sea, the breeding of the American blue crab is observed, which may be accompanied by significant changes in the local ecosystem and become a new avenue for the fishing industry. However, experts believe that controlled use of this species can have a positive impact on both people and the nature of the Black Sea.
